Civil Explosives - Press Room - News - MAXAM´s first blast in Rio Tinto´s Oyu Tolgoi Mine (Mongolia).

MAXAM´s first blast for the newly signed supply contract in the world´s largest undeveloped copper-gold project, Rio Tinto´s Oyu Tolgoi Mine (Mongolia).

MAXAM signed a long-term Blasting Services Supply Contract with Oyu Tolgoi LCC (Rio Tinto) for the large open-pit and underground Oyu Tolgoi mining operation in Mongolia. The first blast was successfully conducted on the 17th of September 2011.

MAXAM has set-up a RIOFLEX GX manufacturing plant on-site to meet demanding blasting and safety requirements while assuring security of supply. RIOFLEX GX, the most recent development in Bulk Watergel Explosives technology, will be delivered down the hole using the latest generation of FLEXITRUCKs, MAXAM´s Bulk Truck Delivery System. Projected consumption is anticipated to exceed 130,000 metric tonnes throughout the span of the contract.

Once Oyu Tolgoi reaches full target production in 2018, it is expected to be a top ten copper producer, as production is forecasted to reach 400,000 tonnes annually, an amount that would currently equal 3% of Global production. Oyu Tolgoi is also expected to be one of the world´s largest gold producers at an expected 330,000 ounces of gold annually.

MAXAM takes pride in being the explosives supplier to Rio Tinto´s Oyu Tolgoi mining project, contributing to Mongolia’s mining boom. Upon completion, the project has been estimated to account for more than 30% of Mongolia's gross domestic product.
