Press room - News - MAXAM Chairman & CEO, awarded in the 20th anniversary of independence of Uzbekistan

For active and fruitful activity to develop Uzbek bilateral and multilateral trade, economic, investment, cultural, scientific, educational cooperation.

Getting independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Republic of Uzbekistan initiated a program of foreign relations through which leading companies in different areas of activity started operating in the country. These had the goal not only of modernizing facilities and services local companies were offering ‘til the moment, but setting locally the most updated and innovating proposals which international and global companies could offer.

MAXAM arrived in Uzbekistan in 2001, being one of the first international companies in doing so. Since then, MAXAM leads the chemical industry, and is now-a- day the first Spanish investor at all levels. MAXAM carries out its activities in this important country through three companies: MAXAM Uzbekistan, MAXAM Chirchiq and MAXAM-Ammofos.

MAXAM in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is at the heart of MAXAM's operations in Central Asia, a market of great potential for both the mining sector and for the major infrastructure projects that are modernising the country. Their purpose, moreover, is to open up Uzbekistan towards different ports (in Turkey, Iran or China) and to situate it on the map of the major crossroads through which commercial and communications links (mainly rail) between Asia and Europe can be established.

MAXAM Uzbekistan provides products and services for blasting and initiation systems for the sectors of mining, quarries and the building of infrastructures. Noteworthy in the mining sector are the metal mining operations (copper, zinc, molybdenum and gold) of AGMK, a public-private company.

In the spring of 2007 MAXAM acquired 49% in “Electrkimyosanoat”, today MAXAM Chirchiq. Since that date, MAXAM has launched an investment programme for the development and modernisation of this company that produces up to 35 different chemical products, including liquid technical ammonia, nitric acid, ammonium nitrate and urea. Chirchiq's ammonium nitrate is essentially assigned to cover the needs for this raw material (basic in any civil explosive) of the different MAXAM companies worldwide.

And Ammofos-MAXAM, the name of the company previously known as “Ammofos”, which MAXAM entered as a shareholder of 49% of its stake in early 2008. Currently, Ammofos-MAXAM is the country's largest fertiliser manufacturer, a position due to be consolidated through the investment programme that MAXAM is implementing. Its products are exported both to neighbouring countries, old Soviet republics, and to other countries from the major Black Sea ports. This shares, added to those in Chirchiq, have supposed an investment from MAXAM of more than 40 M$, figure that will get to 120 M$ after the modernization program of these facilities already in progress.

Three operations that for MAXAM represent a total of more than 10,000 employees and sales of over 180 M€, making of MAXAM a crucial actor in the industrial and business scene of a country that is a driving force in Central Asia, both for its geostrategic commercial position and for its mineral resources.

Among other personalities, this award was also given to Carlos de Palacio Oriol, Chairman of the Spanish railway company Talgo.
